GRENVILLE - A large crowd of angry onlookers gathered outside the court house in Grenville yesterday to get a glimpse of the four young men who are currently in police custody in connection with the vicious weekend assault of Father Martinianus Chidi Chil, a Catholic priest stationed at Birchgrove in St. Andrew’s. It is alleged that the four young men attached the priest at his residence sometime around 10 o’clock on Saturday night. The religious leader is believed to have made desperate attempts to protect himself from his vicious attackers who proceeded to inflicted cut wounds to his arm and fingers. Neighbors were drawn to the screams of the priest for help and came to his rescue. It is also believed that the young men are in the process of helping the police with their investigations into a number of criminal offenses in the St. Andrew’s area, which includes house-breaking and stealing. Many of the curious onlookers who converged outside the court house to get a glimpse of the four young men were heard openly castigating them. While one person was heard remarking that ‘the priest was not God’ and that ‘other persons had young children too’ the vast majority expressed their utter disgust at the actions of the men. Many were of the view that something has to be done urgently to address the upsurge in violence that is taking place in the country. Some were even suggesting that hanging should be brought back in the country to act as a deterrent to potential criminals. In an interview with one of the nation’s media houses, Father Martinianus made an appeal to parents to exercise control over their children and play a more pro-active role in their lives. He made an appeal to them to exercise deep concern when their children come home with expensive gadgets or other items that they never had before. He advised them to conduct their own investigations and take the appropriate action. INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
