CARRIACOU ATHLETES MADE THEIR MARK AT THE GUT CO-OPERAT...

Hillsborough, March 27th- Although they were unable to return with the championship trophy, the athletes of Carriacou and Petite Martinique still made their mark at this year’s National Inter-Primary Schools’ Athletic Championships. The contingent of 39 athletes secured a total of nine medals, including three gold. Rising track star Mickel Joseph captured two of the three gold medals, winning the under 13 boys’ 200 metres dash and 100 metres dash. The other gold was won by Reanna Allen, a student of the Dover Government School. She outclassed her competitors in the under 11 girls’ cricket ball throw, setting a new record. Allen threw a distance of 39.46 metres, smashing the old record of 38.90 metres. Under 11 athlete, Antonio McIntosh, copped two of the remaining haul of medals for Carriacou and Petite Martinique. She placed third in the girls’ long jump and second in the girls’ 100 metres dash. Other outstanding athletes were Rhea Compton who placed third in the girls’ discus throw, Renae Noel was second in the under 13 girls’ javelin throw, and Aria Wilson copped a silver medal in the under 11 girls’ long jump. Another medal winner was Ria Benjamin, a third place finisher in the under 9 girls’ cricket ball throw. The team was accompanied by Sports Officer in the Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs Joel Lendore, assistant coach Francis McLawrence and teachers representing each primary school. The Inter-Primary Schools’ sports meet, sponsored by the Grenada Union of Teacher and Co-operative Bank, was held Thursday, March 26, at the National Stadium in St. George’s.
