ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, MARCH 26, 2009_ Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas on Thursday welcomed the rebirth of the Grenada Cadet Corp. The Prime Minister made the comment during a meeting with members of the steering committee of the Corp, headed by Chairman, Charles George who updated Prime Minister Thomas on the restoration process and gave the assurance that the programme, which has been out of commission for almost 30 years, will contribute positively to the transforming of the society. “We want to strengthen the relationship between the new Cadet Corp and the Ministry of National Security,” said Mr. George, who described the Corp as a “good source of recruits for the Royal Grenada Police Force.” The Prime Minister said he believes the Corp is “good for young people,” both in their student and adult lives. “You have my full support to this project, it will help young people to prioritise and contribute to national development. It is especially good for our young males,” the Prime Minister said, while appealing for the inclusion of Carriacou in the programme. The delegation assured the Prime Minister that the sister island was included in the planned development of the Corp. The Chairman called on the Grenadian leader to strengthen the legislative framework by urgently appointing an advisory body to restructure the Cadet programme. Mr. George’ pointed out that Grenada has “significant” support from regional countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Jamaica among others. He pointed to the speedy provision of uniforms from Trinidad and Tobago to the new Grenada Cadet Corp to enable their participation in recent independence celebrations after being absent for more than three decades as one example of that goodwill. Chairman George told the Prime Minister the programme is catering for between 300 and 500 new recruits in the various secondary schools over the medium term. In this regard, Mr. Charles said two training courses for potential officers of the Grenada Cadet Corp will be held July and August. From: Government of Grenada INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
