GRENADA - Miss Shevon Alexander, a former student of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (S.A.A.S.S), was last Friday presented with the prestigious EU Buckmire Memorial Award for her outstanding performance in the 2008 CXC Examinations. Shevon attained 11 CXC passes which included 9 grade 1s. The presentation ceremony took place at the school’s make-shift auditorium and was attended by officials from the Ministry of Education, Mr. Simeon Collins from the Grenada Bureau of Standards, the Buckmire Brothers from Paris Pharmacy in Grenville, the Principal and teachers of the school, parents, students, well-wishers and the awardees. The EU Buckmire Science Award is given annually to a student from one of the three secondary schools in the parish of St. Andrew who has performed outstandingly in the field of science. The award was first given in 2005. This award is an initiative of the Buckmire brothers, owners of Paris Pharmacy, Grenville. It is their way of encouraging students of the parish to develop a keener interest in the field of science and rewarding those who have done exceptionally well. The first recipient of this prestigious science award was Liselle Joseph, a former student of the St. Joseph’s Convent (Grenville) back in 2005. The 2006 recipient was Leon Abel of SAASS and the 2007 recipient was Jensen Henry of SAASS. By taking home the award in 2008, Shevon has ensured that the trophy will remain at the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School for the third consecutive year. Hollee Roberts and Scott Matthew of SAASS and Amanda Edgar and Jeanette Roberts of the St. Joseph’s Convent (Grenville) also received Awards of Distinction for their outstanding performances in the 2008 CXC/CSec exams. Shevon is presently a student at the TA Marryshow Community College and is furthering her studies in the field of Natural Science. INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
