GRENADA - The Mc Donald’s College (MDC) from the historic Parish of St. Patrick’s and the St. David’s Catholic Secondary School (SDCSS) were able to walk away with the 2009 Scotia Bank INTERCOL Championship trophies in the male and female categories respectively. SDCSS was able to win the trophy for an unprecedented eleven consecutive years in the female category while the boys from MDC were able to re-capture their title from the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS). The male stars during the enthralling two-day games were undoubtedly Kirani James from the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School (GBSS) and Rondell Bartholomew from the Mc Donald’s College (MDC). The rivalry between these two young athletes was very intense over the duration of the games. On Day 1 of INTERCOL, Kirani was able to pull off an amazing victory in the 400m for senior boys in a record time of 45.3 secs, finishing narrowly ahead of Bartholomew who clocked 46.0 secs and was ahead of the pack of athletes for the first 320M. Kirani was also able to pull off a sensational win in the 200M with another record-breaking performance, finishing ahead of Rondell with a time of 20.8 secs. Rondel completed the distance in 21.5 secs. In the 100M event, however, Rondell was able to win gold for mc Donald’s College with a time of 10.5 secs. In the Junior Girls category, Nickhelia John of SAASS and Antonia Wilson from SDCSS were undoubtedly the shining stars on the track, both raking up a total of 14 individual points each. Lucy Fortune from SDCSS amassed 12 points and was also one of the superb female athletes on display over the two-day athletic meet. SDCSS was able to amass a total of 137 points to win the Female category in convincing fashion. They were followed by SAASS with 75 points and St. Joseph’s Convent (Grenville) with 47 points. In the male category, the INTERCOL trophy went to MDC who amassed 89 points. They were followed by the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School (GBSS) with 70 points and the Grenville secondary School (GSS) with 53 points. The biggest disappointment over the duration of the games was clearly the performance of the male athletes from SAASS, the 2008 INTERCOL champs, who came in at a distant 4th place. As usual, Day 1 of the Games was poorly attended while on Day 2, the ground was packed to capacity. The onus is obviously on the organizers of the INTERCOL Games to devise creative means of pulling out more support on the first day of the games when some of the more competitive events are held. Grenadian Connection wishes to congratulate the INTERCOL champs for 2009 and applaud all the athletes who would have given off their best and performed well throughout the games, making it the highly competitive and exciting athletic championship that is not synonymous with the Scotia Bank sponsored INTERCOL Games. "the biggest disappointment" was SAASS.... I think that the person reporting should be as mutual and unbiased as possible and report the facts and not personal feelings.
