ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, APRIL 7th 2009_Grenada is providing support to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago as that country prepares to host the fifth Summit of the Americas in April. Grenada’s Prime Minister Tillman Thomas along with U.S. President Barack Obama and the heads of government from the thirty-four member countries, will be welcomed to Port of Spain by Prime Minister Patrick Manning for the summit which will be held from April 17th -19th 2009. In an effort to assist in the preparation for the Summit, the Government and People of Grenada have agreed to provide “supplemental” support to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. Under the agreement, a contingent from the Royal Grenada Police Force and Special Services Unit (SSU) have been integrated as part of the regional and international security apparatus in Port of Spain. Grenada’s airspace and the Point Salines International Airport will also be used to facilitate both civilian and non-civilian traffic and personnel during the Summit as a number of United States support personnel and equipment will be based here. “The success of the summit is as much a win for Trinidad and Tobago as it is for the region. Grenada will play its role in providing the necessary support due our proximity to Trinidad. We believe this is an opportunity for Grenada to show its commitment to the partnership necessary for a successful event,” Prime Minister Tillman Thomas said. Grenada has also pledged to provide any additional or on-going assistance wherever possible, so as to ensure a safe and successful hemispheric event. INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
