UNIONS URGED TO JOIN THE STRUGGLE FOR A JUST SOCIETY

St. George’s, April 9, 2009, (GIS) – The Government of Grenada has given its commitment of full support to the labour movement in this country. Tourism and Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Peter David, told members of the Grenada Trades’ Union Council (GTUC) that the National Democratic Congress administration would do everything in its power to ensure the labour movement remains strong. The Minister was addressing the GTUC’ 9th Biennial Convention in place of Labour Minister Glynis Roberts, who was out of the country on State business. Mr. David warned that although the GTUC has government’s backing; it is no reason for the Council to lose the vigilance for which it has become known. ”While I may disagree with some specific actions on the part of the unions sometimes, that is no reason for the union to lose its vigilance,” stressed Mr. David. “And I say to the union movement that you have specific interest that you must guard. So while we may disagree at times as government and union, do not allow that to stop you from exercising vigilance. You must maintain that.’’ Mr. David said that in the present global economic crisis, it’s important that there be dialogue between government and trade unions. He highlighted government’s intention to remove certain taxes, saying it’s something for which unions have been struggling for a long time. Minister David reminded TUC members that while they fight for workers’ wages, there is a greater need to strive for better health, housing and education for working people. He also issued a call for all Grenadians to commit themselves to creating a new and progressive nation. “I say to persons, the struggle we were engaged in up to July last year was not simply a struggle of removing one government and replace it with another,” said Mr. David, who is also General Secretary of the ruling NDC. “The struggle had greater dreams. The dreams that we have as a government are the same that you have as unions. I want us to come together to further the ends of creating a better society; not just another society, but one that is rooted in justice.”

While Unions can help in some way, I am of the opinion that Unions do more harm than good and could be one of the good reason for job losses and outsourcing from Grenada. Grenadians are of the opinion that the company making plenty money and dey eh paying us enough. So we put pressure on dem and soon the job has left Grenada to end up in India or the Phillipines where these people work harder and for much less without any problems. Think well about this Union business.
