LONDON, UK, May 11, 2009 - A reception to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Commonwealth was recently held at Buckingham Palace, London with over 240 representatives from the 53 countries of the Commonwealth. The Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, hosted the event, along with The Duchess of Gloucester, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Princess Alexandra and the Honourable Lady Ogilvy. Grenada's representatives for this event were Mr Anthony George, Ms Akima Paul and Mr. Eric Cato, who were selected from a shortlist of candidates who embodied the goals of the Commonwealth - namely, the promotion of representative democracy and individual liberty, the pursuit of equality and opposition to racism, the fight against poverty, ignorance, and disease and free trade. Mr George, artist, was the designer of the Grenadian flag for Independence in 1974, and was selected as a commendation for his remarkable work in making the Grenadian flag one of the most prominent in the world. Ms Paul, a dispute resolution lawyer in London, and a graduate of Cambridge University and the University of Paris (II) has been active in her work in spearheading the Grenada Youth & Student Association in the UK, her work with the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative where she recently volunteered in promoting human rights and governance in Ghana, and her participation in a legal pro bono organisation Advocates for International Development. Mr. Cato, has been a stalwart in the East London Community for many years and since he retired has been giving of his time to improve the health services in Grenada. He was instrumental in the twinning of the Borough of Hackney with Grenada in 2003 and initiating a nurses exchange programme with the Homerton Hospital and the St. George’s Hospital. After being presented to the Queen, the guests were treated to a musical performance of the Cantata for the Commonwealth. It was specially composed by British musician Paul Carroll for the Commonwealth's Diamond Jubilee celebration. The Cantata was performed by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, London Voices choir and soloist Steven Leas under conductor David Rowland. Guests then met with members of the Royal Family at the Reception. The event was also attended by former Secretaries-General Sir Shridath Ramphal, Chief Emeka Anyaoku and Sir Donald McKinnon as well as former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda.
