CARRIACOU - With cricket being one of the leading sports in the Caribbean , the Division of Sports within the Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs is ensuring that students at the six primary and two secondary schools on the island are exposed to the sport. The Division of Sports organized annual Gilbert Brathwaite inter-primary and inter-secondary cricket tournament was launched today, Friday, with an official opening ceremony. Sports Officer Joel Lendore in his remarks said while his division is committed to sports development, young players should balance sports with academics and remain focused. Area Education Officer Gertrude Simon-Niles challenged schools to balance their expenditure on sports by ensuring that no sport suffers. Also attending the opening ceremony was Cosnel McIntosh, the initiator of the tournament and Anderson Matheson, Personal Assistant to the Minister for Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs. Six female students are participating in the competition, with four coming from the Mt. Pleasant Government School and the other two from Petite Martinique. From Deanna Isaac
