Efforts to ensure Carriacou becomes the centre of excellence for small ruminants production, the division of agriculture within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs hosted a one day training for small ruminants (goats & sheep) farmers and agriculture students on the management of internal parasites. Livestock Officer Norland Cox noted that one of the parasites creating problems for the livestock industry is the barber pole worm, which is a blood sucking parasite that is common in the abomasums (the sheep's fourth or true stomach). However, Cox highlighted that internal parasite control starts with good management and common sense and animals should not be fed on the ground, water should be clean and free from fecal matter and pastures and pens should not be overstocked. He said the agriculture division will also be working along with the farmers to develop pastures. Also forming part of the workshop was a presentation by Livestock Consultant Pweil Mwasha who spoke on the development of a model farm school which would look at the management and processing of goats for meat production among other things. From Deanna Isaac (Carriacou)
