PRIME MINISTER HOSTS GRENADA’S PARTICIPANTS AT CHELSEA ...
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, WEDNESDAY 10th, JUNE 2009_ Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas on Wednesday evening hosted members of Grenada’s team which won gold at the Chelsea Flower Show last month. Addressing the ceremony at his official Mount Royal residence, Prime Minister Thomas congratulated Susan Gaywood and her team, which spans the Atlantic, for playing their part in marketing Grenada in a competitive tourism market. “What you are doing makes us proud but you have a deeper impact on our country. You are marketing Grenada to the United Kingdom, to Europe and to the rest of the world. Your contribution must be commended,” the Prime Minister told the gathering. He said Grenada’s success at the world renowned flower show must push the Ministry of Agriculture to focus more on stimulating the production of flowers to satisfy a global demand and gain much needed foreign exchange for the island. “Grenada’s involvement in this show is evidence that a marriage between our tourism product and our agriculture industry is workable and has great potential. It shows this government’s policy on redeveloping our agriculture is one in the right direction,” the Prime Minister said. Ms. Gaywood, in her short address, spoke of the collaborative efforts by Grenadians at home and in England, coupled with contributions from non Grenadians, in making the Grenada booth at the Chelsea Flower Show as successful as it has been over the past 12 years. “I could not do it alone. It took the efforts of people who have a heart for what we are doing in helping to attract visitors to Grenada,” she said in response to Grenada’s seven gold medals over 12 years. Agriculturist and businessman, Denis Noel, praised the contribution of several local partners to Grenada’s participation in the event. He said “people working together can achieve great things.” The Chelsea Flower Show is the ultimate event in the gardening calendar in the UK. At the end of the ceremony, the Prime Minister was presented with an iced cake for his birthday, which he will celebrate on Saturday while in the UK on his way to an Official visit to the Peoples Republic of China. He will be 62 years old.
