ST. GEORGE'S, (GIS) - June 16, will see the commencement of plant distribution for the planting season and Agriculture Minister Denis Lett, is promising an orderly and equitable distribution to farmers. The plants to be distributed to farmers this year include 15,000 nutmeg, 17,000 cocoa, 10,000 citrus, 4,000 mangoes and 20,000 minor fruits. The Ministry of Agriculture has put extra effort into rehabilitating propagating stations on the island, said Mr. Lett, adding that the move would help increase the number of plants available for distribution next year. “Significant increase in plants to be distributed will be seen from the 2010 planting season,” he said. “We have spent much time, energy and monies rehabilitating the propagation stations and the effects will be realized from the next planting season.” The Agriculture Minister is also encouraging farmers to make proper use of the plant obtained. He said, “It has been noted over the years that persons obtain plants and do not plant them and I want to discourage this type of behaviour.”
