St. George’s, June 16, 2009 - Agriculture Minister Denis Lett says that government has heeded farmers' call for the creation of more markets for their produce. His ministry has collaborated with Windward Islands Banana Development (WIBDECO) in leasing the agro-processing plant in La Sagesse, St. David. The plant factory will be used to pulp and freeze fruits for export. Minister Lett said WIBDECO has already secured a market in the United Kingdom for the pulped fruits. “At the factory, we’ll be pulping and freezing all the fruits and ship them to an ice cream company in England that is interested in making ice cream flavours from our fruits,” he said. “So that’s a sort of ready market that WIBDECO has already worked out.'' A second farmers' market outlet is Baron Foods Limited of St. Lucia, Mr. Lett disclosed. He said Baron Foods has also shown interest in doing business in Grenada. "The company and the Grenada Industrial Development Cooperation are negotiating,'' Mr. Lett said. "If all goes well, the company will set up a factory outlet in Seamoon, St. Andrew.” The Agriculture Minister also hinted that the Grenada Marketing and National Importing Board and WIBDECO are having talks on coming together to purchase fruits and vegetables from local farmers.
