St. George’s, July 24, 2009 (GIS) – The Grenada Ministry of Health, as part of its protocol for dealing with the H1N1 virus or swine flu, has identified an isolation unit at the General Hospital where all infected persons will be treated.
Quality Improvement Officer in the Health Ministry, Ruth Penny, has assured Grenadians that under no circumstances would a swine flu-infected person be treated in the same unit housing patients with other illnesses.
Grenada recorded its first case of swine flu on Wednesday in a man who had returned here from Haiti. However, health officials have reported that he is responding well to treatment.
Chief Medical Officer Emma Herry-Thompson, in an exclusive interview with the Government Information Service, said once it was recognized at the airport that the individual was showing symptoms of the H1N12 virus, he was quarantined and treated.
“That individual was cultured, started on treatment and is doing very well,” she said. “Though the culture was behind, it was highly suspicious for the influenza virus but he was very sick. So we went ahead and treated him, pending results of the culture.’’ |
