AG ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLITICAL FALLOUT OVER IN...

St. George’s - In an interview with a local media house yesterday, Grenada’s Attorney General, Mr. James Bristol, admitted using the official letterhead of the Attorney General’s office in writing to a United States prosecutor seeking leniency for his step-son, Emmanuel Ganpot. Ganpot, who was due to be sentenced in a Pinellas courthouse in April 2003 to a period of imprisonment for dealing in drugs had fled from the USA to Europe where he had remained a fugitive from justice until his recent apprehension. In a report by Curtis Krueger, a Times Staff Writer for the St. Petersburg Times, Ganpot was reported as living-it-up overseas, staying in expensive homes in England and France and partying on Spanish beaches while being a fugitive. During that time, Krueger speculated that, Ganpot, 36, received help from family members who let him stay at their homes overseas, and who paid $80,000 to his bondsman to get him off Ganpot's track.” Attorney General Bristol is reported to have written a letter to the US Prosecutor in this case soliciting clemency for his step-son. However, in doing so, he would have used Government stationery with the official letterhead of the Attorney General’s office, something he expressed regrets about after retrospection. Bristol said that he had spoken to the Prime Minister about the matter, accepted full responsibility for his error in judgment and was prepared to abide by any decision that Prime Minister Tillman Thomas intends to make in respect of this matter. In the meantime, this issue is a major talking point in many quarters all over the country as people give ventilation to their opinions on the matter. Some suggested that the Attorney General may have inadvertently embarrassed the new NDC administration because by using government stationery to write a personal letter in this case, he may have unintentionally created the impression that the Grenadian Government had endorsed his sentiments expressed in the letter – especially given the nature of the case surrounding Ganpot. Yet still, others are of the opinion that he may have demonstrated an unacceptable level of competence in making such a ‘simple mistake’ and if that was the case, then was he really competent enough to advise Cabinet on more complex and complicated issues. Not all sentiments expressed, however, were negative. Some people are of the opinion that he has shown a high level of commitment towards helping out a family member who was in trouble; something that any family loving person will do if a close member of their family became entangled with the law. All attention is now focused on what the Prime Minister’s action in this matter will be.
