BRISTOL DISAPPOINTED WITH PRIME MINISTER’S DECISION

In an interview with BBC Caribbean, Grenada’s former Attorney General, Mr. James Bristol, expressed disappointment with the drastic action taken by Prime Minister Tillman Thomas to ask for his resignation over what seems a very trivial matter, something which he characterized as ‘making a mountain out of a molehill.’ Prime Minister Thomas said that he regrets the circumstances but his decision was based on his commitment to keep his promise to the people of Grenada to restore high ethical standards, procedures, practices and integrity in public office. In his interview, Bristol suggested that the present administration in Grenada (National Democratic Congress) is run by a ‘…second cabinet outside of the constitutional cabinet.’ In explaining what he meant, he said that the Prime Minister (Hon. Tillman Thomas) has his advisors outside of the cabinet and they are the ones who make the decisions and those are the people that he listens to. Bristol stated that if you looked at the letter, which is at the center of this political fallout, its content and the context in which it was written does not constitute a serious error in judgment which warranted his dismissal from the post of Attorney General. He stated categorically that the letter did not make reference to the government in any way, but instead referred to him writing a personal plea on behalf of his step-son which is the same thing as if he had gone into the witness box and given a mitigating statement. Mr. Bristol has found support from outspoken Grenadian trade unionist and labour representative in the Upper House of Parliament, Senator Chester Humphrey, who referred to the furor as a ‘tempest in a teacup.’ In commenting on his immediate plans, Bristol said that he intends to go back to his private practice as a lawyer in one of the more prestigious law-firms in the country.

The Prime Minister was right to sack Jimmy Bristol.Unlike Chester Humphrey, who said that it dont make a different whether he uses Government letter head or not. The issue is I have no problem with Jimmy Bristol writing a reference for his stepson thats cool .The point is he was trying to use the Government paper to give weigh ,so to speak, to his plea. Clearly he knew what he was doing when using the Government paper .In hindsight what Jimmy should do is inform the government what he was doing but the fact that it was personal and if so why use the Goverment paper? That man has abuse his position

Hangman,Gabe Whats up fallas? It has been a while. Well here is my take on this matter. I think Tillman was correct in asking for his resignation. Bristol is a well educated lawyer, and he knows better. He tried to appease his wife and unfortunately for him, he lost his soul. One cannot ask for clemency thru a Country or Goverments letterhead. It's not only a conflict of interest but it sounds like favors could be granted later through the goverment with this type of business because of favors granted and this is why he should have left it alone. Remember Bristol was also one of these Attorneys involved in getting clients involved in this selling passports business among many other so called lawyers not only in Grenada and the US but also in Canada. This thing has to stop. I have always said in the past, you cannot trust a lawyer. They are the biggest thieves and crooks. If he wanted to intervene on behalf of his stepson, he could have written a letter on his own lawfirms letterhead, and followed it up with a personal call to the proscecutor, but not on the Attorney General's letterhead. I am in agreeance with Tillman Thomas, he did the correct thing in my opinion. Put his backside out. We need to keep thins clean. The days of Mitchel is dead and gone now.

Gabe, you always write with confidence and you get your point across. You have said all that I wanted to say. However, I still want to say that Mr Tillman is hopefully going to take us away from the era of Mr Keith Mitchell when politicians sometimes behaved badly. I think that Mr Tillman is showing Grenadains at home and abroad that he meant what the manifesto said. We cannot have sleazy in grenada-leave that to the politicians here in England. Their day for justice is coming soon, the people will prevail. Mr Nimrod should stay quiet because keith mitchell government would have done nothing.

It seem as though change is coming, the Prime Minister has done a courageous job by asking Mr Bristol to resign. As a person with the responsibility to up hold the law Mr Bristol should know better.Forget politics for now and look deep in you soul Mr Bristo, and you will see that the PM did want was right.

Fellow grenadians it seems that when ever we take one step forward we end up taking two backwards, first of all my point is that Mr Bristol was appointed grenada chief law man the main law enforcement officer and he of all people should know that in his private and public life his behaviour will always come under the microscope that is part and parcel of the job and he knew this when he accepted the job and although he is chief lawman he is not above the law so whatever wrong he may have done he had to go for we cannot allowed the law saying one thing and doing another and that goes for the government also and so i am afraid that he Bristol has to abide by the rule and remember that this government came to power for change and change it must be and for thoes who break the rules they have to go there is no other way.
