TRANSFORMING TODAY’S CLASSROOM FOR TOMORROW’S WORLD
St. George’s, July 28, 2009 (GIS) – The use of technology in the classroom is one of the main focuses of a week-long conference of the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) being held in Grenada. At the end of the 34th Biennial Conference of the CUT, teaching wou ld have learnt something more about technology and would be able to implement it in the classroom, says Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT) President Kenny James. “One has to be cognizant that we are living in an age that is flooded with technology,’’ he said. “So we have to look at this and how it is going to impact the classroom and how, as teachers, we can use the technology to advance our cause and to better educate students.’’ Mr. James said the GUT has a head start when it comes to technology, claiming that the local teachers’ union has always been pushing professional development in that field. “We have always been getting a hold of technology and using it in the classroom”, he said. “As a matter of fact, computer studies were part of our summer course last year. Teachers who were not too computer savvy were exposed to the whole aspect of computing, so that they could use it to do their grading of papers and also as a teaching aid.” The theme of the CUT conference is, “Transforming Today’s Classroom for Tomorrow’s World.’’ Mr. James says it is possible that a final report of recommendations from the conference could be presented for consideration by leaders of the Caribbean Community, who include Grenada’s Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas. (Courtesy Government Information Service)
