CANADIAN GOVERNMENT CONCERNED ABOUT GRENADIAN VISITORS ...
In a prime time address to the nation last night (July 30), Prime Minister Tillman Thomas informed the nation that the Canadian Government was deeply concerned about the large number of Grenadian Nationals who refuse to come back to Grenada upon the completion of their stay in Canada. He mentioned that more than one-third of Grenadians ‘visitors’ to Canada have not been returning home after their period of stay expired, something the Canadian Government wants addresses urgently. He also stated that the Canadian authorities were very concerned about the large number of Grenadians filing for political asylum in Canada. Prime Minister Thomas warned that the Canadian authorities will not relax the visa restrictions slapped on Grenada back in 2001 because of the now defunct economic citizenship program which was instituted by the previous Grenadian administration. Even though the program has long since been terminated, Canada has not lifted the visa requirements imposed on Grenadian nationals. Prime Minister Tillman Thomas and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) party had promised Grenadians during their election campaign (last year) that they were going to work to have the visa restriction to Canada lifted if they were elected into office. The one year old NDC administration has been engaging the Canadian authorities since they got into office to have the visa removed.
