GRENADIAN ATHLETES RETURN HOME WITH TWO MEDALS

The five-man Grenadian team that participated in the recent Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships (held at the Hensley Crawford Stadium, Trinidad) returned home today. The team returned with two medals: a gold medal in the 400m, won by World Youth Champion, Kirani James in a blazing 45.43 seconds and a bronze in the same event won by fellow Grenadian Rondell Bartholomew who competed the same distance in 46.61 seconds. Akim Bowen, Josh Charles and Shakir Simmons did not medal in their respective events; Akim Bowen placed 15th in the 100m preliminaries in a time of 10.76 seconds, Josh Charles completed the 200m in a time of 22.68 seconds and did not advance to the next round while Shakir Simmons placed 9th in the Shot Put with a distance of 16.75 meters. Grenada's 4x100m quartet (comprising Akim Bowen, Josh Charles, Rondell Bartholomew and Kirani James) finished 5th behind the USA, Trinidad, Canada and Jamaica. The United States dominated the Championships followed by Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica and Canada. Grenada placed 9th, ahead of Chile, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the Bahamas, Barbados and Paraguay.
