EMANCIPATION DAY CELEBRATION IN CARRIACOU  
Hillsborough, August 4th, 2009- On August 1st, 1834 British abolitionists and resistant fighters on Caribbean plantations triumphed in their efforts to end centuries of the enslavement of Africans on sugar estates. In commemoration of the 1834 victory and the horrors of the slave trade and slavery, residents of the eastern villages of Mt. Pleasant and Grand-Bay dressed in African cloth and flowers, celebrating Emancipation Day by singing Negro Spiritual, beating drums and doing a walk through the villages. The event, organised by the Mt. Pleasant & Grand-Bay Community Development Organization, also paid tribute to a former resident who was known as Tan Cot. It is said that on August 1st each year, Tan Cot used to dress up with the flowers of the corn plant and walk through the village in celebration of the abolition of slavery. Meanwhile, the Carriacou Carib Organization held its annual Emancipation Day celebrations. Dressed in African outfit and with torches in hand, members marched through the town of Hillsborough chanting songs and beating drums. Minister for Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs Senator the Hon. George Prime, together with Senator Arley Gill and Chief Executive Officer of the Grenada Cultural Foundation Dexter Mitchell, were also part of the celebrations. From Deanna Isaac Carriacou
