LOCAL GROUP REQUESTS MEETING WITH PRIME MINISTER TO DIS...
August 5th, 2009 Hon. Tillman Thomas Prime Minister Prime Minister’s Office Ministerial Complex St. George’s Hon. Prime Minister, Re Urgent Request for Meeting - Protect the Lagoon Park Greetings Hon. Prime Minister! We write as a follow-up to our letters of July 10th and July 25th, requesting a follow-up meeting with you after our initial meeting of July 7th with a delegation comprising representatives our group, the Willie Redhead Foundation, community representatives, Fishermen and boat owners of the Lagoon Road community. At that meeting, Hon. Prime Minister, you declared your commitment to the following: - no cottages on the Lagoon Park - respect for the rights of traditional users. We have noted, Sir, your presence, along with other members of your government, at a press conference at the Camper and Nicholson marina to launch “this phase’ of the marina development. We have noted that this ministerial presence at the press conference coincided with the resumption of backfilling of the Lagoon shore. A fisherman from the Lagoon area has also advised us that he was told by Camper and Nicholson representatives that “the Prime Minister has given his approval for the backfilling!” We take this opportunity to draw to your attention, Hon. Prime Minister, an interview with Mr. Clyde Rawls of Camper and Nicholson, in the August 2009 of the Barnacle paper, page 11. In response to a question from the Barnacle about cottages being constructed on the Lagoon, Mr. Rawls responded as follows, “ No, I’ll never say never. We have no immediate plans,(my emphasis). We own freehold but we haven’t got plans to do anything with it right now.” It is clear, Hon. Prime Minister, that the declarations of Camper and Nicholson are in conflict with the commitments made by yourself in respect of the Lagoon Park and the rights of traditional users. Given these claims and the resumption of the backfilling which is proceeding full speed without: (i) the protection of the ‘silt traps ‘ from what we can ascertain (ii) the resolution of any of the issues and concerns that were raised with yourself and at the stakeholders meeting, we are urgently requesting the promised follow-up meeting with yourself on these outstanding concerns and issues. We look forward to your positive response soonest. Sincerely yours, Sandra C.A. Ferguson For Citizens in Defence of Grenada’s Lands and Heritage
