The Marketing and National Importing Board (MNIB), in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council, have this week been celebrating what has been dubbed ‘Mango Fest 2009.’ This initiative is part of a project funded by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to promote the marketing of the fruit and to heighten local awareness of its many uses. Mango is said to be the 5th most consumed fruit on the island and it has high nutritional values. The organizers of this week’s festival hope to encourage people to eat healthy and promote greater local consumption of the fruit. Mango Fest 2009 commenced on Sunday August 16 and will climax on Friday August 21, 2009 with a grand event at the Grenada National Stadium. No admission fee will be charged and people are encouraged to attend this event with their children and friends to look at the many varieties of mango on the island, look at and sample some of the local recipes, and see for themselves the many different things that can be done with mangoes.
