The New Labour Party (NLP) was officially launched on Tuesday August 25, 2009 at Sam’s Inn in the rural parish of St. Andrew. Many of the executive members of this new political outfit are former members of the Grenada United Labour Party. The NLP joins the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New National Party (NNP) and the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) as the major political parties on the island. The symbol for the new political party is the ‘Ark’, which evokes memories of Noah and the Great Flood and created some humor among Grenadians. In the words of one person ‘We now have Jonah in the NNP and Noah in the NLP.’ One of the executive members of the NLP is Mr. Winston Whyte. He stated that the party was formed to offer the country a new alternative and that they intend to avoid making some of the mistakes that were made in the past.
