BERNARD COARD AND MEMBERS OF THE GRENADA 17 SET FREE
click
GRENADA – Former Deputy Prime Minister of Grenada under the ill-fated People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) from 1979-83, Bernard Coard, along with other members of that administration incarcerated for the brutal slaying of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and others in 1983, have just been released from the Richmond Hill Prisons. They were released at around 10.55 am today (Saturday September 5, 2007). According to a news release coming from the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday, a total of 42 inmates had their sentences reviewed by the Board of Review. The Board subsequently submitted its findings and recommendations to the Minister of National Security who, in the exercise of his discretion, forwarded the recommendations of the Board for action by the Minister Responsible for the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy. The Minister, pursuant to her powers - under Sections 72-74 of the Constitution of Grenada - today advised the Governor General to remit the remainder of the sentences of 14 prison inmates thus releasing them from incarceration. As a result, a total of 14 prisoners were freed today, among them, 7 inmates from the so-called Grenada 17 (Bernard Coard, Dave Bartholomew, Callistus Bernard, Leon Cornwall, Liam James, Ewart Layne and Selwyn Strachan), bringing to an end some 26 years behind bars. Other members of the group (Grenada 17) have already been released, in keeping with a court order, arising out of the resentencing hearing in June 2007, for their sentences to be reviewed within 2 years. Without that review order from the court, their sentences would have expired within one year. A sizable crowd gathered at the gates of the Richmond Hill Prisons to greet the released prisoners as they took in their first few breaths of freedom. Among them were members of the Grenada 17 who were released earlier, family members, friends, their lawyers, members of the media and well-wishers. Their freedom of the members of the Grenada 17 has come about seven months after a rumor began circulating in the country that they were to be released on February 07, 2009 in commemoration of Grenada’s 35th anniversary of Independence. This rumor was denied by Government officials.

SAM, thanks so much, i had a conversation with my mom this morning about revolution and Coard and others. She said that she herself had to run for life. She also said if she and her friends didnt leave the time they did, they would have been dead....that really hurt my heart, because there would be NO ME, if my mom was killed....I am getting a book soon, i ordered one, and i did read the websites. I am really saddened, all we can do now is pray and ask God to soften these people hearts so they can repent. I dont know how some people can live so long with such guilt and continue to live in denial.....

Stallion, thank you so much for your information. I remember asking my great-grandma about the revolution but her facial expression and they look in her eyes were too much to bear. I want to learn more but i dont want hear-say i want the truth and it seems to be hard to find. I am even skeptic about what i read, but i know bad things happen. God Bless

After reading all these comments i feel really bad. If Bernard Coard and this other men did kill people and hurt so many families heart, why are they part of society now? I would not judge them because i am not God but i hope they repent and give their lives to christ because THERE IS A GOD ABOVE AND HE WILL DEAL WITH THEM....I hope that they would at least tell the families sorry and feel some form of remorse.

Sam there is a lot of thing that you are not awear of and I wish the whole thing was handled right so we would of known that not all of the people that were in jail was involve or responsible for what went on . Take Lt.Bathalamue for example. my question still remain why was his name on the list of the RMC? why was Prime IN there? what was the General role in all this? I would like these question to be answered.Until then I cannot hold all 17 men responsible.Yes somebody have to be held responsible for it but we need the truth not half truth. When RFG read out the names of the RMC the first time certain people name was on the list and by the late evening and next morning the names that was called out was change ,so my question is why the change in names. Is that certain men did not want their names on that list because they was so deeply involve in the process and other men took the heat for 27 years and they walking around town like if nothing happen. sam I want to know who wrote the general speach on the 19th of October 1983? Believe me there is a lot of things you need to know sam before you paint everyone with the same brush. Until you have all the facts dont wish all of them rot in jail. lets find the original list of the RMC, lets find out who made the list, lets find who dug the grave. who berry the bodies ,who wash down the fort after the excution.who put the bodies on the truck, who drove the truck to the grave, who buried the bodies. who gave the orders to execute Murice and them.Men there is so much question left unanswered its not funny. Like I said there is a lot you need to know. Dont judge by what happen on the fort only but what tanspired before and after the APC AND BTR rolled in. Question did the RMC really exsisted? or was it a cover up did they took power? or was it a saftynet to protect the leaders. we need to know this things SAM then and only then we will get the truth. hey man it was nice charting with you I think you will know me to but thats ok we may meet one day in london.

John with all seriousness this so called 17 are glorifying what they did.Thats why all 17 should rot in jail. If they had succeed in they crazy idea what you think Grenada will be like? I was not involve in the pogate ,no .I WAS as special outstanding student am sure you will know who I was if I explain but thats cool.
