From the Office of her Majesty's Opposition September 21st, 2009: Members of Her Majesty’s Opposition believes that the time has come for the Tillman Thomas administration to stop and look at the immediate and long term effects of some of it’s decisions and to desist immediately from any approach which will further destroy the morale of the public service. The Opposition believes that the recent decision taken by the NDC to make personnel changes at the Customs Department within the Ministry of Finance is politically driven and will also have negative implications for such an important department of Government operations. The decision of the NDC administration to replace someone who is a hard working professional, with years of experience and commitment to his job is one that cannot be supported by the Opposition. Members of the Opposition are also shocked that the Government will appoint a team to investigate the operations of the department which included former staff members who were transferred years ago and who cannot be objective in their recommendations. The plan to move the Comptroller and replace him with the Chairman of the same investigating team is also unbelievable and must be seen as inappropriate and definitely a conflict of interest. There is a growing trend that this Government is removing hard working persons from positions because they are not perceived as being their supporters and this goes totally against their claims of no victimization. They continue to recommend their friends and family members for key positions without recognizing the moral and ethical issues involved. The NNP will continue to highlight the issues that affect the rights of the people to ensure that the country does not degenerate into chaos. The opposition calls on the Government to stop the victimization of workers and focus on uniting the country during these difficult economic times.
