“Impressive turnout at Cuthbert Peters’ Park” ST. JOHN’S – 21st SEPTEMBER, 2009 – The first ever Talent Recruitment Drive was conducted in the parish of St. John on Saturday, 19th September by the popular SpeedZone Track & Field Club (SpeedZone), bringing together aspiring athletes from the parishes of St. Patrick’s, St. David’s, St. Mark’s, St. George’s and St. John’s for talent assessment aimed at growing the club’s membership. Despite the inclement weather experienced days leading up to the drive, SpeedZone’s Coaches Albert Joseph and Darvin Bowen, assisted by existing member-athletes of the club, took to one side of the field, testing the registrants in the areas of Maximum Velocity, Acceleration and Speed Endurance for potential towards track careers. According to Coach Albert, “generally, talent is rare but we have seen a number of impressive times that have shown potential; and with some technical changes, we expect that quite a number of them will become competitive at the national level”. On the other side of the field, participants interested in the throws were assessed by SpeedZone’s Coach Jimmy Mathlin in the areas of Strength and Jumps. According to Coach Mathlin, “from the Overhead Throws and the Horizontal Jumps exhibited, we feel confident that our club will continue to remain the number one track club on the island. With the appropriate technical training, these aspiring athletes will definitely develop, and hopefully represent Grenada in the future”. The jumps were not assessed on Saturday due to the sogginess of the designated area. This assessment will be done on another day to be announced by the club. Participants were refreshed, and were addressed by members of the club before the start and at the end of the session. According to Ms. Reece Sam, a member of SpeedZone assisting with Marketing and Promotions, “this was another opportunity for us to fulfill some of our objectives. We have identified some more track and field talents, and are now aiming towards enhancing their potential, thus further developing the sport on the Tri-Island State. We would like to say thank you to the media entities and personalities who assisted in spreading the word out there about this initiative, and we look forward to hosting more of these on an annual basis with their continued support”.
