By Deanna Isaac Hillsborough, Carriacou, September 24th, 2009- Developing the sporting talents of youth is one of the aims of a Police Athletic League that has been established in Carriacou. The league, to create what organisers describe as “well-rounded young men and women,’’ has had its launch at the island’s two high schools, Bishop’s College and Hillsborough Secondary, where a presentation of training uniforms was made to students. The uniforms were solicited from a concerned citizen residing in the United States. The presentation was attended by Sports Officer Joel Lendore and Superintendent Trevor Modeste, Officer in Charge of the Carriacou Police Station. Superintendent Modeste, a former national track and field athlete, was one of the driving forces and initiators of the Police Athletic League. Students were told that the objective of the league is to better prepare them as athletes for participation in national and regional sporting events. It is also hoped that the league would lead to enhanced police-community relations.
