CALL FOR PRIME MINISTER THOMAS TO REVERSE TREND
click
September 28th, 2009: Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell is calling on the Prime Minister, Hon. Tillman Thomas to take charge and reverse a developing trend which will only have negative implications for his Government and for Grenada. According to Dr. Mitchell, the Opposition has been observing with great concern, the continuous and sudden recommendation for transfers, appointments, dismissal and demotion of workers employed by the Government of Grenada. Many hard working, well qualified and efficient workers in certain statutory bodies, Government Ministries and Departments including the Ministry of Youth and the Custom Department, and the Royal Grenada Police Force have been victims of this trend since the Tillman Thomas administration took office in July 2008. Dr. Mitchell noted that these recommendations or the decisions were never based on Government’s efforts to upgrade, promote or to enhance efficiency and productivity in the public service but was totally based on the perceived affiliation of the individuals to the New National Party. He said while every individual has a right to freely support a party of their choice, in many cases, the persons who have fallen victim are innocent since they have no affiliation or loyalty to the NNP. This he says is a good example of how the NDC continues to carelessly destroy Grenada in its quest to destroy the NNP and it’s leadership. The opposition leader calls on the Prime Minister to find ways to motivate and unite workers to be more productive in a time when the IMF has described our economy as being in a catastrophic situation. He said now more than ever there is a need to build the morale of workers and to reward hard work and dedication rather than to punish workers for giving their outstanding service to the nation. The growing trend of removing from critical positions hard working individuals with years of experience and a passion for their work is politically motivated and goes totally against the promise made by the NDC while in Opposition. The NDC had promised that there will be no victimization and total inclusion of people from all political persuasion. Dr. Mitchell therefore calls on the NDC administration to stop deceiving the Grenadian people and to practice what they preached during the campaign. He also calls on the Trade Union Movement to rekindle the same passion they had for workers rights and workers security when the NNP was in office.

CALL FOR PRIME MINISTER THOMAS TO REVERSE TREND
It is welcoming news that Dr. Mitchell has finally come to the realization and acceptance of the fact that irrespective of the party one supports he/she has the right to work. This knowledge seems to have "escaped" him when he was in office. Transfers, promotions, appointments and dismissals is no stranger to the public service and has been effected from its inception and will continue till the end of time. There is nothing new here. People are transferred for many reasons e.g promotions, for reasons of confidentiality, sensitivity, suitability. The Public Service Commission makes appointments all the time , thats the way workers employment status(es) are regularized. I have been a public servant for over 20 years and have worked in almost every Ministry on transfers or assignments. On the issue of victimization of workers relative to their party support, these utterings would be well served by statistics - name the persons, the Ministry/Statutory bodies they worked in, their post and the reason(s) they were dismissed or demoted. Provide the facts to make a good case. Dr. Mitchell said "in many cases the persons who have fallen victims are innocent since they have no affiliation or loyalty to the NNP" .. if thats the case where is the victimization against NNP supporters? As far as I know it is a norm that when governments change there are changes relative to "key" public officers. It happens all over the world. Whats the big deal? I wholeheartedly agree with the call for workers to be motivated and united as a means of increasing productivity. The Leader of the Opposition could and should - if the development of Grenada is something he is genuine about - play a major role in the unity process.
