POLITICAL VICTIMISATION AND MISMANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES ...
From the Office of the Leader of the Opposition Leader of the Opposition, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell says he will not be silent as the Tillman Thomas administration continues to deprive the poor of a daily bread to fulfill election promises made to affluent members of the NDC. He said it is obvious that the recent case in which security contracts were taken from a young man Mr. Oswald Gilbert from River Road, St. George’s and given to the former Chairman of the NDC (who is currently employed as a manager of a local company); is another case of political victimization but also clearly demonstrates the vindictiveness of this administration. The Opposition leader says the fact that the former chairman approached Mr. Gilbert (before any representative of the Government) and boasted that he will be taking away his contracts, is a clear indication of how the NDC Government operates. Dr. Mitchell says he is convinced that the way in which the Government cancelled the contracts is another demonstration that this administration has absolutely no care for the poor people of this country who are trying to help themselves. He said the NDC was only giving lip service when they said during the last election campaign that they will depoliticize the society. Dr. Mitchell says while the country continues to sink into greater financial difficulties as a result of the mismanagement of the NDC; rather than cutting back on unnecessary spending, the Government continues to hire and give contracts to persons who already have more than one source of income. He said while the Government is able to find the resources to do this, students through out the island are unable to attend school because they cannot afford to purchase the necessities for school such as shoes, uniform and bags which were provided under the previous administration. He noted that while the Government says on one hand that there are no monies to provide transportation allowance for needy students, on the other hand the children and close family members of certain Government ministers are able to secure vacation jobs paid for by the State. In addition, Government Ministers continue to take large delegations on trips around the world as a means of delivering on promises made to their close friends and cronies during the last general election. Meanwhile, Government is saying to thousands of elderly citizens through out the island that they cannot afford to provide them with $200.00 per month under the Public Assistant Programme. The Opposition Leader says this trend by the NDC cannot be supported by anyone who is genuinely interested in the development of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique and calls on the Government to refer back to the promise of inclusion which was made during the 2008 elections campaign. .
