OPPOSITION QUESTIONS THE INTENTION OF GOVERNMENT IN APP...
From the Office of The Leader of the Opposition October 12th, 2009: Members of Her Majesty’s Opposition are questioning the recommendation by the Tillman Thomas administration to replace the former Supervisor of elections Ms. Nordica Mc. Intyre with a junior civil servant who is known to have little experience operating at that level, and who is believed to be closely associated with the NDC. Member of Parliament for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Hon Elvin Nimrod says ‘The NNP administration has always sought to ensure that there is no political interference in the Electoral Office’. He noted that after the last general elections, the OAS commended the former supervisor of elections and the staff at the electoral office for the professional manner in which they have conducted the 2008 polls. He therefore believes that the recent change confirms information reaching the Opposition that the Government may be setting the stage to interfere with the electoral process as a means of ensuring that they remain in office for another term. The Opposition believes that the NDC is now well aware that the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique are totally dissatisfied with their mismanagement of the economy, their dishonesty, broken promises, and general incompetence; and that they have lost significant support since the last general elections. Nimrod believes that this can well be the reason why the NDC is attempting to manipulate the electoral office and undermine the integrity of the electoral process. Nimrod explains that the NNP administration was always very sensitive to even the appearance of interference in the day-to-day management and operation of the electoral office to the extent that members of the NDC attempted to influence activities in that office during the last general elections. The former Minister questions the reason behind the choice, since there are many well qualified, professional and experienced senior civil servants who are more politically neutral and better qualified to hold the position of Supervisor of Elections. Nimrod says he also finds it rather surprising and strange that a Prime Minister who constantly preaches accountability, transparency, good governance and protection of institutions will support such a recommendation. Nimrod believes that this is a clear case of saying one thing and doing the opposite. The Opposition is therefore appealing to the Governor General to ensure that structures are put in place now to ensure a free and fair election whenever it is called, since interference with the electoral process can have serious negative implications for the peace and stability of the country and can destroy the very democracy we have come to enjoyed and cherish during the NNP administration.
