LETTER TO GEORGE WORME
click
October 30th, 2009 Mr. George Worme c/o New Today Marian St. George’s Dear George, On the Liquidation of Grenada Today It is with dismay, sadness and a deep sense of loss that I have heard of the news of the court-ordered liquidation of the Grenada Today newspaper following a long running legal battle against former Prime Minister, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, in a matter of criminal libel. I therefore consider it incumbent upon me to offer my solidarity and my appreciation of the sterling contribution of the Grenada Today and the yeoman service of yourself as its Editor in the governance process of this country during its nineteen (19) years of existence. Grenada Today, under your leadership was an institution and bastion of resistance against political intimidation right up to the end. We have seen over the last six (6) years the emergence of a bolder press in Grenada, where persons are less intimidated to put certain information in the public domain and to ask the difficult questions of our politicians and other decision makers. Many more press persons begun standing their ground in their exercise of journalistic responsibilities in spite of the insults and threats hurled at them by those who exercised power. Yourself and the Grenada Today were undoubtedly a beacon lighting the way in that regard. During the election campaign of 2003, I took the deliberate decision to exercise my citizen’s rights and responsibility and participate in the political life of Grenada through writing. Grenada Today generously afforded a space for the public expression of my many letters and articles, facilitating an opportunity to share information with the general public and to provoke debate on issues of national concern. In 2008, this contribution to public advocacy was recognized by both the Willie Redhead Foundation and the University of the West Indies 60th Anniversary Committee, Grenada. It would not have been possible without the role played by your paper. In 1990 when your paper came into being we had a most apathetic electorate. While Grenada still has a long way to go, the consciousness of the electorate has certainly been re-awakened and Grenada Today has contributed significantly to this re-awakening. Grenada Today has paid the supreme price, liquidation, for resistance to political intimidation but as old people would say, “time longer than twine”. I am sure that in time both you and the Grenada Today will be vindicated. The New Today, with which you are again associated, assures us that out of the ashes will arise a Phoenix. Thank you for the 19 years of Grenada Today in the service of we the people. Thank you to all who made it possible, particularly your staff, your advertisers, your mother and the network of vendors and distributors. Sincerely yours, Sandra C.A. Ferguson
