DR. MITCHELL MEETS EU DELEGATION
November 12th, 2009: Leader of the Opposition, Dr. the Rt. Hon Keith Mitchell has called on visiting representatives of the European Union not to be misled by members of the NDC administration and those who support the Government such as some Union leaders and leaders of groups fronting as Non Governmental Organisations. Dr. Mitchell advised the team to speak to the local man on the street, those in the rural communities and local business men to receive an honest view of the state of the economy and the performance of the NDC Government. The team from the European Union included Mr. John Wiggins and Jorge Shepherd who are conducting a review of Grenada’s Public Financial Management System. Commenting on Government’s spending, Dr. Mitchell said he is extremely concerned that the Government continues to spend illegally and has refused for the last 16 months to hold meetings of the Finance Committee to discuss and approve Government’s expenditure. This behaviour has caused the Opposition to be very suspicious as to why the Government has been so secretive about its spending. It is strange that the same persons while in Opposition had insisted that the NNP administration present the records of it’s spending every three months as stipulated in the laws of Grenada. Dr Mitchell noted that a government that preached accountability, transparency and good governance in Opposition is now proving that it is unable to live up to the true meaning of these words since they have flagrantly ignored the approval process. All Government spending must be approved by the Finance Committee, and afterwards scrutinized by the Public Accounts Committee to complete the process of accountability to the Public. The meeting also discussed the plan to implement the Value Added Tax (VAT) in February 2010. Dr. Mitchell informed the delegation that the Government laid the VAT legislation in Parliament and rushed it through the process despite his request to make a contribution to the debate. He said the Government chose to pass the Act the same day he was returning home even if there was no urgency One would have thought the Government would have valued his input and guidance, being the only sitting Parliamentarian who has been through the experience of implementing VAT in Grenada and could therefore have provided practical advice. Dr. Mitchell believes that the Government is making a fundamental error in proceeding with VAT at this time since the current state of the economy will not lend to the success of this initiative, and noted that the vulnerable people of the country are the ones who will be most affected by the Government’s decision. In relation to the Public Integrity Bill, The Opposition leader pointed out to the European Union team that the Government while in Opposition constantly clamored for the passing of the Public Integrity Bill which was done then. However after 16 months in office the law has not been put into effect. Members of the NDC Administration have refused to declare their assets and to do many of the things they advocated for in Opposition. The meeting also discussed a number of other issues including the impact of the world crisis on Grenada. OFFICE OF THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

Ohboy, I understand your fealings with regards VAT. I do not support additional tax on the backs of the Grenadian people especially as you rightfully put it, Grenadians are struggling to find money to feed their families. Grenadians should have raised hell when it was first introduced around 1986. Please correct me if my timeline is incorrect. I also agree that our politicians should be more creative as far as generating funds. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Who you all think you going to tax more - VAT (VERY ANAL TRANSACTION)? Grenadians cannot find money to feed their families and provide other basic needs. Guys get off your lazy fannies and apply your management skills instead of looking for easy treasury money. Afterall the people did not vote for you to punish them with more taxes! People of Grenada, Protest this nonsense!!

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR. Keith should think twice before running to the EU Delegation and complain about the NDC like a child rushing to Daddy to tell on his little brother. I can imagine little Keith with his they are bad and we are good attitude. Can you imagine how little Keith was laughing because Daddy will beat them? I guess he was singing "na, na, na, na, na" the EU going to beat you. That's how the NNP acts; very very childish. On a more serious note,(Keith, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR). The local man/woman in the Street may give reasons why they think the economy is in such a terrible state and you may not like it. Don't forget that the NNP was in office for approximately 13 years and was implicated in scandal after scandal; from selling our most precious sites, offshore banking that was big news in the United States, call center, passports and the list goes on and on. The local man and woman in the Street kicked you and your NNP out of office for good reasons. Please don't underestimate Grenadians. Of course, there are some that you unfortunately Dumb down and they will always worship you. It's highly unethical for an intelligent man like you to fool those who are less informed just to stay in power. Thats a big shame. Keith's move is a very selfish one. It seems that he rather create a problem for the NDC and Grenada, instead of encouraging the EU to assist Grenada. Keith's actions shows that he only cares about himself and his party. Therefore he is highly unpatriotic. He seems to just wants the NDC and Grenada fail so that he can look good. I wonder if Keith ever think about the struggling people? The rejected PM and his group maybe doing very well financially as expected. Therefore they don't seem to understand the hardships that poor Grenadians are facing. I know Grenadians who were unemployed for years since during your regime and they have to support a family. Please put in a word for them when meeting with influencial people. You will get some credit for that. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR BECAUSE YOU MAY GET EVEN MORE. May God bless and protect Grenada and I wish Grenadians success regardless of what Keith and his puppets may be up to. Peace.
