MINISTER CONGRATULATES SCHOOLS ON FOOTBALL VICTORIES

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, November 19, 2009 – Minister for Sport and Youth Empowerment, Hon. Patrick Simmons on Thursday extended congratulations to the champion schools in the Republic Bank RightStart Youth Football Tournaments. Mac Donald College completed unprecedented treble titles when it secured the senior boys’ championship, with a 3-2 win over St John’s Christian Secondary School, in front of large and appreciative crowd at the National Stadium at Queen’s Park. Earlier, the St Patrick-based school also defeated St David Catholic Secondary School 2-0 to capture the Junior Division title after securing the Knock-Out Championship on Monday. It was also history making for the St Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) as the girls secured the title for the fourth consecutive year. SAASS, led by their prolific scorer Serene Beggs, defeated Boca Secondary School in the girls’ final on Tuesday. Minister Simmons said his Ministry would like to commend the players,coaches, officials, sponsors and spectators for ensuring a successful tournament. “Our Ministry will continue to support activities which are enriching for the development of our young people,” he said. “This completed tournament is one of many partnerships the Ministry will continue to engage with the private sector”. The Minister said the competitive rivalry will encourage our young people to harness a spirit of camaraderie in society. The Annual Secondary Schools’ Football Tournament is organised by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Empowerment with sponsorship from Republic Bank.
