Port of Spain, Trinidad, Thursday, November 26th 2009_There is a need for greater education on key issues facing the region if Caribbean people are to make informed decisions that will affect their destiny, Grenada’s Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas told reporters in Port of Spain, Trinidad, today.
He referenced to the establishment Caribbean Court of Justice, noting that some governments require a referendum and a two thirds majority of the voting population, to make the CCJ the final appellate court for the region. He noted that the British Privy Council, which now serves as the final court for the region, is backing the move.
His comments, on the eve of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Port of Spain, come in the wake of the referendum in St.Vincent and the Grenadines where the government lost its bid to change the constitution.
On the upcoming Commonwealth Summit, the Prime Minister said it provides an opportunity for developing and developed countries to work together on critical global issues such as climate change and to further deepen bilateral relations in areas such as technology transfer and assistance in infrastructural development.
“I believe the Commonwealth is still very relevant because it provides an opportunity some of the world’s developing and developed countries to work together on the basis of a common understanding and shared values,” the Prime Minister said.
He noted that more information is needed to engage the people of the Caribbean on climate change, based on the scientific evidence and the fact that some island states are already feeling the effects of rising sea levels and hotter temperatures.
The Prime Minister who is preparing for the global meeting on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark in December, said he expects an agreement that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce global warming.
This is the last major meeting prior to Copenhagen. The focus here will be the whole question of climate change and the application of Rwanda to the Commonwealth. Grenada has no objection to the acceptance of Rwanda for membership, if they are looking at sharing in the values that binds the commonwealth,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Thomas and his CARICOM colleagues met this afternoon to caucus on some important issues that will come before the Commonwealth meeting which opens on Friday morning.
Head of the Commonwealth Queen Elizabeth the second and several heads of government are arriving in Trinidad and Tobago this afternoon and tonight including India’s Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. French President Nicholas Sarkozy is also slated to arrive this evening to attend the event at the invitation of Prime Minister Patrick Manning, who told journalists this afternoon Mr. Sarkozy “has a point of view he wanted to share.” |
