PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD, SATURDAY, 28TH NOVEMBER 2009_Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has put forward a strong case for a binding agreement on climate Change to his Danish counterpart, Lars Lokko Rasmussen, during a meeting in Trinidad on Saturday, while attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit. The two men agreed that climate change was a “serious threat” to small island developing states but differed on the desired outcome at Copenhagen. Prime Minister Thomas, who is also chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), said he is looking forward to “a legally binding agreement” by which all states must abide, while his counterpart was satisfied that a politically binding agreement was a good start, with the possibility of moving to give the agreement teeth at some future date. “Our position in AOSIS is that we want to see an agreement which provides concrete measures to decrease emissions while providing financial support for adaptation and mitigation over time. We believe it is necessary to keep the pressure up because we fear it will be a long drawn out process to reach a final and legally binding agreement if we do not act now,” Prime Minister Thomas said. The Prime Minister said he expects AOSIS states to present a united position at the Copenhagen summit next month.
