SALUTE CADETS, BUT EXPLANATION NEEDED
click
The recent restoration of the Grenada Cadet Corps is to be greatly applauded. Being a cadet teaches one to comply with commands from superiors honourably; it disposes one to give commands nobly rather than abusively; fostering good leadership. Cadets learn to act collectively for the overall well-being of the unit. A cadet knows how to act individually, for the good of both himself and the corps. Every cadet learns self-control . It builds positive character, self-esteem and self-worth, of which our young people cannot have too much. Socialization is promoted. A cadet has opportunities to go camping, at home, or travelling abroad, widening horizons. It may all be summed up by saying that being in a cadet corps inculcates in a person the virtue of discipline, which is a life-long asset . Certain persons have been issued by His Excellency the Governor-General of Grenada , surely acting on advice, with commissions appointing them as officers in the Grenada Cadet Corps. The Grenada Government Gazette of 25 Sep 09 records that there is the Commandant, who is a Major. There are three Lieutenants, and eleven Second Lieutenants. Theirs is the responsibility of leading the Corps from scratch, a worthy challenge. All this, however, is badly marred by a certain rather striking omission, namely , the failure to issue a commission in the Cadet Corps , and a top one too, to Deputy Commissioner of Police Smith Roberts. Probably more than anybody else, DCP Smith Roberts has led in paving the way for the resuscitating of the Cadet Corps. Over several years , DCP Smith Roberts has worked tirelessly, consistently, with exemplary zealousness and commitment in getting the Corps off the ground again. His qualification for a commission are undeniable . And he is very much among young men, in football nationally .DCP Smith Roberts is a clear-cut police officer. He does not seek to ingratiate himself with any of the political forces. The omission to issue a top commission is the Grenada Cadet Corps to DCP Smith Roberts needs explanation. This omission, if left without valid explanation, raises the question whether there is an agenda for the Corps, in which persons like DCP Smith Roberts have no place . This would leave the Corps in unnecessary, unwanted and unhealthy controversy among persons in whose hearts bubbles strongly a good sense of fairness. This would be a grave disservice to the Corps, from the start. I strongly call for this omission of DCP Smith Roberts from the officer ranks of the Corps to be corrected urgently, for the good of all; so that we may unreservedly salute cadets.
