NIMROD CALLS FOR TRANSPERANCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
click
Parliamentary Representative for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Hon. Elvin Nimrod, says the Government’s refusal to disclose information on its income and expenditures for the last sixteen months in office leaves the Opposition to believe that there may be information that the Government is trying to hide from the Grenadian public. Following a sitting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) this week Nimrod compared the behaviour of the NDC Administration with that of the NNP. He said that the NNP always supported the work of the PAC, since it recognized the important role it performs in protecting the interest of the public. He explained that Public officers were encouraged to appear before the PAC and to provide all requested government records and information. However, he noted that this has changed since the NDC administration assumed office. Officers are now reporting that they are only able to provide information in respect of audited reports. In the case of Grenada, because these reports are two years behind, only information up to 2007 will be provided while all financial information pertinent to the NDC term in government will be withheld. According to Nimrod, this is another strategy of the Government to hide its incompetence and the refusal of the Government to provide important information to facilitate the work of the Public Accounts Committee is a deliberate attempt to hide information from the public so that the people will not know about the reckless spending of the NDC Government and the true state of the economy. Nimrod is therefore calling on the Government to allow all Public Officers to freely perform their duties with out any political interference in order that they can provide information to the PAC and to the general public since the people have a right to know what is happening with the resources of the State. The Government must be reminded that they were placed in office to conduct business on behalf of the people and as a result, must account to the people on a regular basis. The Opposition further calls on the Government to remember and live up to its campaign promise which was to provide accountability, transparency and good governance. From THE OFFICE OF THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
