VISMIN COMMUNICATIONS CALLS ON LIAT SHAREHOLDERS TO WOR...
Whitby, Ontario, December 22, 2009 – With the announcement by regional Caribbean governments to renew the fleet of LIAT aircrafts that currently serve the region, it is incumbent upon us to remind Caribbean governments that Canada’s current fleet of Dash 8 aircraft’s have served the region very well and there is absolutely no need to digress from Canada at this time in favor of the Chinese. It will be a disservice to Canada at a time when the current trade negotiations between the Governments of Canada and the Caribbean Commonwealth will no doubt lead to a stronger Caribbean Trade Agreement that meet the norms of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and facilitate more sustained trade and investments between Canada the Caribbean Commonwealth. In addition, Canada’s recent foreign policy announcement to re-engage the region through increased bilateral aid and other initiates to boost and sustain Canadian trade and investments in the region. Last but not least, Caribbean regional governments must also remember the generosity shown by Export Development of Canada when the region sought a line of credit to purchase the Dash 8 fleet. Given the above, it is clear that those engaged in the decision making for the acquisition of LIAT’s new fleet should not disengage from Bombardier in favor of the Chinese. The Chinese do not have an aviation history in the Caribbean and very little is known of their aviation capacity and strength that would foolishly lead Caribbean governments to favor the Chinese over Bombardier. The Canada- Caribbean Commonwealth Trade Initiative is aimed at strengthening and sustaining social, cultural, educational and economic links between Canada and the Commonwealth Caribbean. Canada and the Commonwealth Caribbean have a long and traditional relationship dating back to the 17th Century when Canada and the Caribbean Region were engaged in the bartering of goods to maintain trade relations. This is an excellent opportunity to continue strengthening these links and Caribbean Governments are once again requested to support Bombardier and reject the Chinese aviation offer.
