SEN. CHESTER HUMPHREY WANTS MORE DECORUM AND DIGNITY AT...

GRENADA - In a call in programme on one of the nation’s media houses last week Sunday, Sen. Chester Humphrey, the Lion of Grenada's Upper House of Parliament, voiced his opinion on the debate over Mrs. Marietta Mitchell - wife of Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Mitchell - and the incident at the Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA) sometime ago surrounding her diplomatic passport. Humphrey said that while he does not know the reasons why Mrs. Mitchell may not have surrendered her passport, he is of the view that the wife of the Leader of the Opposition, including the Leader of the Opposition himself, ought to have a travel document the equivalent of a diplomatic passport – whether it be a diplomatic passport or an equivalent travel instrument - by virtue of the office that he occupies. Sen. Humphrey said that he thinks it is time for Grenadians to ‘grow- up’ and realize that Dr. Mitchell occupies a very important constitutional office as the Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition and he has to be treated with the decorum, graces and facilities that goes along with the office, and likewise his wife. He said he will like to see an end to this ‘petty-minded vindictiveness’ in Grenadian politics. He said he will try to get the Privileges Committee convened because he thinks that all members of Parliament should hold travel documents other than their regular passports and that the Leader of the Opposition, in particular, should hold a travel document equal in status to that of the Prime Minister.

Very nicely said Senator Humphrey. We don't all ways see eye to eye on a subject, but I must support you here because you are right. It is very interesting that this happen at MBIA. Not every one in Grenada was in agreement for the airport to be renamed after former prime minister Maurice Bishop, but the government went along and renamed it because it was constructed under his watch. And if he was alive under the NNP he would have been given a diplomatic passport for being a former prime minister. Ask former prime minister George Brizan a current holder of one. And for those who think the wife of the Opposition leader and former prime minister should not have a similar passport to what he has, are we saying that when they are traveling together overseas they will have to be separated from each other because of their passport? Ms Veronica I dont think you are advocating such. Its a biblical principle for one to show respect to those who have gone before, those who have serve the country especially in a leadership position. We are only damming ourselves when we treat our people with scant courtesies. The bible says "Woe unto him that calls good evil and evil good." As a people we have to ensure that we are not putting our self in the way of God's judgment.

Mary, why does Mrs Mitchell need a special passport? As I have said before I have no problem with Dr Mitchell passport he was the former Prime Minister and is still a member of Parliament. He rightly deserves respect and diginty. I do not agree that Mrs Mitchell or Cherie Blair needs special passports.

Veronica and all others should know by now that all former U.S presidents , British prime ministers and their spouses have earned certain rights and should be treated with respect, even after they are no longer in the political limelight. The leader of the opposition, his ministers and their spouses have earned the same priviledge. This behavior will not occur in any country let,s not show our ignorance to the international community and treat the wife of the returning prime minister with dignity.

Go Senator Humphrey! I could not have said it better myself, especially when I first read the article about the petty confrontational stance the present government had taken. Show some love and respect for those who have served our country; also for our heroes and outstanding citizens. Wake up Grenada, it is about time to move forward and upward-Please STOP the regression!
