Hillsborough, Carriacou, December 31st, 2009- The Government of Grenada is taking a serious approach to the long dry weather spell currently affecting the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The islands have experienced 50% less rainfall when compared to last year. The water situation has attracted the attention of officials of the National Water and Sewage Authority (NAWASA) and Hon. Joseph Gilbert, Minister for Communications, Works and Public Utilities. Hon. Gilbert recently visited Carriacou to meet with Senator the Hon. George Prime, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, to discuss ways of avoiding what potentially could become a water crisis. The two ministers, along with NAWASA’S employee Eric Smith and other representatives of the authority, also toured some of the island’s water catchment areas to look at what needs to be done to ensure that a sufficient supply of water is produced for citizens here. The main site examined was the underground water catchment located in Beausejour, which already supplies water to the town of Hillsborough. It is said that this catchment can produce at least 20,000 gallons per day. The Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs has convened several strategic meetings in the past weeks with the aim of developing a water strategy for the twin-isle parish.
