Grenada’s Prime Minister Tillman Thomas said on
Thursday his recent five-day visit to Cuba, at the invitation of the island’s President Raul Castro, was a success.
“My visit has been fruitful. We continue to be interested in strengthening our mutual cooperation, as well as that between Cuba and the rest of the countries of the region,” said Thomas before leaving Havana, at the Jose Marti International Airport where he was seen off by Deputy Foreign
Minister Rogelio Sierra.
The Prime Minister said he talked with President Raul Castro about several topics of mutual interest, like the world economic crisis and
climate change “which is a threat to both nations,” and added that in the case of Grenada, this phenomena could reduce the country’s territory and
affect the tourism industry.
Tillman Thomas said the time has come to create a much more genuine brotherhood in Latin America and the Caribbean. He recalled that his nation has repeatedly urged the United States to lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba in regional scenarios like the Caribbean
Community (CARICOM) and more recently during a meeting of Latin American and Caribbean states held in Cancun, Mexico.
Grenada’s top official thanked Cuba’s support in the training of young people from his nation in various fields, while expressing his government’s willingness to continue strengthening bonds with Cuba.
In addition to meeting with Raul Castro, Thomas paid homage to Cuban National Hero Jose Marti as he placed a floral wreath at the monument dedicated to the Cuban Apostle in Havana. As part of his programme, he also visited several places of interest in Havana.
This was the Grenadian leader's second visit to Cuba, having first traveled there in 2008 to attend the Cuba-CARICOM Summit that took place in
Santiago de Cuba, in the eastern part of the country. |
