Hillsborough, Carriacou, April 27th, 2010- Fulfilling the constitutional rights of the people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, through local government, was the focus of a workshop organised by the Grenada Trades Union Council for workers in Carriacou. Local government was an election campaign promise of the now ruling National Democratic Congress, and progress towards its implementation has included the development of two papers on the issue. One was produced by Carriacou-born Professor Randolph McIntosh of the University of the West Indies, and the other by well-known Grenadian constitutional lawyer Dr. Francis Alexis. Over the past year, the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs has also engaged residents in the twin-isle parish in a series of consultation, seeking their input on the local government proposal. Another series of consultations will be embarked upon shortly to discuss which model of local government will be best suited for the islands. Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Senator George Prime, said the consultation is a critical part of a bottom up approach to governance, in which citizens are sensitised into playing an essential role in development.
