VENDOME MARVELITES MOVE INTO THE FINAL OF ST. GEORGE NO...
ST GEORGE'S - Vendome Marvelites and Hampshire United clashed in a semi-final game at the Vendome playing field as the SGNE 2010 football competition resumed on Thursday. This fixture was a virtual repeat of the SGNE constituency knockout semi-final of last week and like it also ended in a deadlock with penalties being used to determine which team would proceed to the final. The game ended with both teams having scored a goal each. Shawn Jones scored for Vendome Marvelites, with Danny St. Louis netting for Hampshire United. In the penalty shoot out with three penalties completed by both sides,Vendome Marvelites were leading by a three to two margin. Vendome took their fourth penalty which first struck the cross bar and then the ground and was awarded as scored by Referee Cuthbert Brown after consulting with his linesman. Hampshire United took strong objection to this protesting vigorously and after various attempts to get them to continue with the penalties failed in spite of a couple yellow cards being issued, Mr. Brown blew the final whistle. Result to Vendome Marvelites on penalties four to two. Vendome celebrated while Hampshire United vowed to lodge an official protest. Some spectators lamented the absence of Goal Line Technology (GLT) to assist the match officials but a representative of the organisers of the competition pointed out that this was banned by FIFA in addition to being a bit expensive for the SGNE Football Committee. On Friday, Red Out will host Tempe All Blacks in the second semi-final at Horeb. From Michael Bascombe
