Hillsborough, Carriacou, February 16, 2011- Sixteen years after the last development work took place at the Lauriston Airport in Carriacou, phase one of new airport development has commenced. In 2010 the Government of Grenada, through the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, forged a relationship with Dynamic Partners Investment Ltd. to upgrade and rehabilitate Lauriston, the island’s lone airport. Phase one of the work entails a topographical survey which will determine the elevation of the allocated area and pavement testing. This phase is being done by Kaizen Environmental, a Trinidadian company headed by Sven Somair. Upon completion of Phase one, work will begin on a new terminal building to be constructed on the northern side of the present terminal edifice. Melvin Woodley of Dynamic Partners Investment Ltd. also said work on a new apron will commence in April, and the airport’s runway – now 800 metres – will be extended to 1200. Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Senator George Prime, said he is looking forward to the airport development. “Carriacou will now take off. An airport is described as the gateway to any country’s development,’’ Sen. Prime said. By Deanna Isaac Carriacou
