The people of Grenada are about to reap the true benefits of the Government’s tourism investment strategy, according to the President of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association(FCCA)Ms. Michele Paige.
Ms. Paige expressed this view today during a meeting with Prime Minister Keith Mitchell.
Accompanied by the Vice President of Caribbean and Atlantic Operations of the Princess Cruise Lines Mr. Stephen Nielsen and Associate Vice President
of Royal Caribbean International & Celebrity Cruises Mr. Michael Ronan, Ms. Paige noted that in addition to more ships and passengers, the new
Cruise Ship Terminal in St. George’s will maximise employment and training opportunities for Grenadians, create more opportunities for the tourism sector, as well as result in more stay-over visitors in the long-term.
Prime Minister Mitchell said Grenada’s potential in terms of eco-tourism, sports tourism and the many avenues of growth for farmers and agro-processors are most encouraging.
“Grenada is getting more recognition internationally for its pristine environment and our production of organic fruits and vegetables. The
potential for growth in these areas is extremely exciting, given the health interests of today’s travellers,” the Prime Minister said.
Ms. Paige made particularly mention of the consistent efforts of Minister of Tourism Brenda Hood in promoting and safeguarding Grenada’s
interests.
“Mrs. Hood has been a force that has been constant and loyal over the years. She has always been forthright. When she didn’t agree, she told
us and we appreciate that,” Ms. Paige said.
The FCCA delegation assured the Prime Minister that the Association is cognisant of environmental concerns and is investing millions of dollars in
waste water treatment plants on ships to ensure that there is no dumping of untreated waste in Caribbean waters.
Prime Minister welcomed this, noting that by protecting the environment, the industry is protecting its own future.
“We all have to work together. Our relationship is one of mutual respect and understanding and I look forward to continued cooperation,” he said.
