GSM NETWORK LAUNCHED IN GRENADA
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: After a successful testing period of three months, Cable & Wireless Grenada rolled out its GSM with GPRS network last week following a media launch last week. Company officials, in launching the service, expressed confidence in the ability of the Grenadian economy to sustain it, citing the success of its Internet Service which some had said a small island like Grenada could not maintain. "We have moved from two cellular sites in 1989 when we commenced offering mobile services to 17 GSM sites today," General Manager Carlyle Roberts said. "With seven more GSM sites coming by April 25, our sister islands of Carriacoun and Petit Martinique long regarded as the back waters of telecommunications will be given all the focus that Grenada has received." With the launch of its GSM service Cable & Wireless is the only telecommunications company now operating three networks - the other two being TDMA, which it will continue to use for another few years and its Fixed Line Network. Simon said the number one issue for moving to GSM is to provide Cable & Wireless customers with greater choice, greater value and flexibility of the system by leveraging the benefits of TDMA, GSM and GPRS.
