KINGSTON, JAMAICA: AWARD-WINNING entertainer, Moses 'Beenie Man' Davis is reported to be stable, though critical condition after surgery to repair a collapsed lung he sustained when his Hummer sport utility vehicle overturned on a highway in Jamaica Thursday. "The prognosis is good and from all reports the doctors are confident he will recover," said Clyde McKenzie, general manager of Beenie Man's promotions company, Shocking Vibes. "He did an operation to remove fluid from his lungs and it lasted about 45 minutes. He has an injury to his lung but it is not life threatening," McKenzie told was quoted as saying. "The surgery was successful, and the doctors just want him to get 24 hours rest, and they will do a re-assessment in 48 hours. We plan to hire three nurses to provide round-the-clock care for him at a private institution," said his manager Patrick Roberts, who is also executive chairman of Shocking Vibes Productions Limited. According to Roberts, "Beenie Man also has an injury over his right eye, a nasty cut on his chin, and a cut on his upper lip. The entertainer also suffered two fractured ribs. The crash reduced the Hummer to a mangled hunk of twisted metal, a vehicle originally built for army-type operations and made to withstand some of the roughest, even treacherous terrain. Beenie Man was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital immediately after the crash where a number of X-rays were done, and was later moved to another facility in Kingston. Beenie Man's mother, Lilieth Sewell, who was at the hospital, dissolved into frightened tears, and had to be consoled by friends. Later in the day, Beenie Man's lungs eventually collapsed, and he was rushed to an operating theatre at the St. Joseph's Hospital. "A lot of concerned persons have been calling such as members of the government, members of the Opposition, and a number of entertainers, especially Cobra, Anthony Cruz, Goofy, Kip Rich, and the Shocking Vibes family have been at the hospital, and they have remained supportive," Roberts said. According to the Central Village police, at about 3:45 am Thursday, Beenie Man was driving his Hummer motor vehicle along the Mandela Highway, when he failed to negotiate a corner at the section of the road which was recently built to accommodate the construction of Highway 2000. The vehicle, the police said, ran off the road, overturned several times before ending up in the ditch. The Grammy-award winning entertainer has been one of Jamaica's leading dancehall acts over the last decade. He won a reggae Grammy in the year 2001 for the album, Art and Life, which was certified gold, and has won the local 'Deejay of the Year' title on several occasions. He made his recording debut in 1981 after performing at a community concert and was spotted by radio disc jockey Barry G who introduced him to producer Junjo Lawes who allowed him to make his first recording, Too Fancy. In 1984 he recorded his first album, The Invincible Beenie Man 10-Year-Old Wonder, for veteran producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee. SOURCE: CARIBUPDATE.COM
