PRIME MINISTER INVITES GBL AND TAWU TO DISCUSSIONS TO E...
St. George's, Grenada; Monday 9th, January, 2012 – The Grenada Government continues its efforts to obtain a resolution in the ongoing impasse between the Grenada Breweries Limited (GBL) and the Technical and Allied Workers Union (TAWU). Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has invited the Chairman of the GBL, Andrew Sabga and the President General of TAWU, Chester Humphrey to a meeting at his office on Thursday for further discussions aimed at resolving outstanding issues. “The objective of the meeting is to facilitate the return of the employees to work and to get both parties to continue the bargaining process,” the letter said, adding that “both parties are requested to put further media appearances on hold as a demonstration of goodwill.” Today’s invitation follows a special emergency meeting of national stakeholders hosted by Prime Minister Thomas on Saturday in the Cabinet Room of the Ministerial complex which discussed possible methods of solving the impasse. That meeting brought together a cross-section of business, religious, and civil society leaders. It was agreed that a senior government official, other than the Labour Commissioner, would preside over negotiations between the two parties. The planned meeting is intended to have the major areas of disagreement addressed by Friday, including a plan for the return to work of Breweries employees very soon thereafter. Saturday’s meeting was attended by the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance Hon. Nazim Burke, Sen. Glen Noel, Minister of State with responsibility for Information and Mobilisation, Lana McPhail, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Cyrus Griffith, Labour Commissioner (Ministry of Labour), Sir Royston Hopkin, Russ Fielden, Pancy Cross, Ian Dabreo (President) and Lawrence Lambert of the Grenada Hotel and Tourism Association (GHTA), Aine Brathwaite (President), Hazelann Hutchinson, Keith Johnson and Christopher De Allie of the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GCIC). Also present were Michael Philbert, President of the Grenada Employers Federation, Rev. Christian Glasgow and Rev. Sean Doggett of the Grenada Conference of Churches and Sandra Fergusson of the NGO Community.
