SECOND PLACE FOR MDC IN GFNC QUIZ
On October 5, 2011, Mac Donald College placed second in the final of the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council’s annual quiz which was held at the Grenada Red Cross Association Building in St. Paul’s, St. George. Mac Donald College was represented by fourth form student, Louanne Frederick and fifth form students Jaydyne Alexander and Zaenia Jeffrey. Food and Nutrition teacher, Miss Judith Best coached the team. The quiz was sponsored by Real Value IGA supermarket in Grand Anse. The main objective of the quiz was to teach students and inform the general public about health and healthy dietary practices. It was also done as a means of aiding the fifth form students for the upcoming CSEC CXC Examination 2012 and to select a team to represent Grenada regionally. The quiz was based on the following topics: Nutrients, Food Groups, Meal Planning, Nutrition, chronic diseases, digestion/absorption, consumer factors, sanitation, food preparation and HIV/AIDS. A week before the final of the quiz was held, a preliminary competition was held in each school zone (Eastern, western and southern) in order to determine the schools that would be representing their zone in the finals. Mac Donald College, St. Rose Modern Secondary School and Happy Hill Secondary School battled for Western zone champs at the St. John’s library in Gouyave, St. John. After the first three rounds of competition, MDC was trailing about 10 points behind St. Rose and Happy Hill was trailing Mac Donald College by 5 points. However, after the remaining two rounds of competition, Mac Donald was able to emerge victorious scoring 85 points. St. Rose scored a total of 80 points and Happy Hill Secondary Scored 65 points at the end of the competition. Upon winning, the students became very excited and anxious to represent their school and zone in the final. The schools in the final were St. Joseph’s Convent (St. Andrew) which won the Eastern zone, St. Joseph’s Convent (St. George) which won the southern zone and Bishop’s College in Carriacou which automatically made it to the finals because Hillsborough Secondary School did not participate. The final began with an individual round. Each team member was asked five questions each. After the first round, Mac Donald College scored 25 points tying with St. Joseph’s Convent (St. George) for the lead. Louanne Frederick, scored 15 points and the other girls scored 5 points each. After the next three rounds of competition, Mac Donald College was in the lead with about 10-15 points in front of Bishop’s College which was in second place. It came down to the fifth and final round of the competition which contained ten true or false questions. Out of the ten questions, Mac Donald College answered five questions correctly and obtained a total of 105 points at the end of the competition. Bishop’s College on the other hand answered 8 of its 10 questions correctly and amassed 110 points making it the winner of the 2011 GFNC Secondary School quiz Undoubtedly, the MDC students were disappointed that they had not won because they knew that they were capable of representing Grenada at the regional quiz. Nevertheless the coach felt proud of the quizzers for placing second and believed that they gave the other schools a run for their money. Two trophies were given to the winning school: one was the champion trophy and the other a challenge trophy. Each team member of the winning team received a 200 dollar voucher from Creative Do it Best Hardware store; second place, a 100 dollar voucher, third place, a 50 dollar voucher and fourth place, a 25 dollar voucher. The winner of the individual round, a student from St. Joseph’s convent received a trophy.
