REOPENING AND DEDICATION OF MDC LENDING LIBRARY
On January 12, 2012, minutes after the staff and students of Mac Donald College paid homage to past student and IAAF World Indoor Games 400m finalist Rondell “Taba” Bartholomew, he cut the ribbon to mark the official re-opening of the Mac Donald College Lending Library. Those present include the Manager of the School, Reverend Doctor Osbert James, Acting Principal, Miss De Allie, teachers, students and members of the media. The brief ceremony which took place at the library began with remarks by Miss Lorraine De Allie, Acting Principal. According to her the school’s lending library was forced out of existence with the introduction of new subjects. After Miss De Allie’s remarks, the Manager of the school, Reverend Dr. Osbert James read from the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Following the scripture reading was this dedication with the refrain being done by the first ten students to join the library. “For the development of beautiful minds and insightful curiosity; (We dedicate this library.) For the creation of a love of books and the acquisition of knowledge; (We dedicate this library.) For the beginning of a life of searching for answers to questions that need to be answered; (We dedicate this library.) For a role in developing the academic reputation and the achievement of the school; (We dedicate this library.) That students when they have free periods may find this room a place of refuge; (We dedicate this library.) That the familiarity with books may lead to a life of lifetime learning; (We dedicate this library.) To the glory of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. (We dedicate this library.)” The very modest collection of books came from: Miss Smith, a volunteer from the Presbyterian Church who assisted students with reading problems at Mac Donald College in 2010; Miss Donnette Narine, a temporary teacher who worked at the school during the last school year; Miss Jacqueleen Zamora, US Peace Corps Volunteer who not only donated books, but also sourced the largest donation of books _8 boxes_ from Hands Across the Sea in the United States. Hands Across the sea is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization dedicated to raising the literacy levels of Caribbean children by assisting schools and libraries in Caribbean communities. The books donated by Hands Across the Sea were new and near new age appropriate, fictional and non-fictional books. A lot of credit must also go to the Mac Donald College Student Council of 2006-2007 which actually started the library project in the early part of 2007. According to the then Vice President of the Mac Donald College Student Council, Miss Arkia Auld, presently a teacher at the school, the group recognized that the school lacked a library and that many students did not read and thus saw it fit to establish a library as its school project. Other members of the Student Council at the time were Chaddel Charles, President, Teresa Williams, Secretary and Kenton Olive PRO. Supervising the group was Economics teacher, Mrs. Ginelle Andall. The only available room at the time was a room in one of the four ply buildings constructed to accommodate students after Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The room had to be remodeled and shelves had to be built to house the books, but it was not until 2010 that books for the library started trickling in. The remodeling of the room and the building of the shelves were done by teachers: Mr. Michael Paul, Mr. Dillon Paterson and Mr. Roy Chitterman. The project of $13,000 was funded by the Government of Grenada during the New National Party reign. Though the shelves of the library are now occupied with books, 95% of the books are actually textbooks from the Government Textbook Programme. Thus an appeal is made to anyone who has age appropriate, new or used books to donate them to the Mac Donald College Lending Library.
